Expressionism

When I started drawing and painting, I was only taught to produce realistic images. A few years ago, I realised that I was intrigued by bold strokes and vivid colours in art, specially if they were abstract or “semi-abstract”. I took a course on Abstract Expressionism, and my art has never been the same ever since.

Expressionism is a style of art where the focus is on depicting the world in a visceral form of an individual artist’s expression rather than a realistic reproduction. The same portrait, scene or object can be painted by 10 different expressionist artists, and each result will be unique. The artists often use strong colours, dynamic brushstrokes and distorted or exaggerated forms to express how they feel about the subject matter. Expressionist art is emotional, authentic and invigorating. It can be perceived as mystical and evoke distinct feelings in the viewer.

In other words, expressionism is the subjective self-expression of the artist, rather than objective reality.
